CAIRO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Egypt opened on Tuesday most of its museums and archaeological sites, including the Giza Pyramids, for visit for free on the World Tourism Day, which commemorates annually on Sept. 27.

The free visit is valid for all Egyptians, Africans and residents in Egypt, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

The ancient country also celebrates the 200th anniversary of decoding ancient hieroglyphs and the creation of Egyptology this year. On Sept. 27, 1822, French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion was able to unravel the mystery of the Rosetta Stone and read the Ancient Egyptian signs correctly after centuries of attempts by scholars and researchers.
