ROME, Italy: Italian restaurant owners clashed with police earlier this week during a demonstration outside Parliament in Rome, as they protested their businesses being shut down during the ongoing lockdown.

Other members of the public joined in the demonstration.

Also, hundreds of demonstrators in the south of the country blocked a major highway in protest of the lockdown.

In Rome, one officer was injured during clashes and seven protesters were detained by police.

Some in the protests outside the Chamber of Deputies lowered their masks to shout "Work!" and "Freedom!"

Others reportedly threw smoke flares or other objects.

Lockdown regulations have banned all but take-out orders in Italy's restaurants, bars and cafes through April.

Earlier, restaurants and cafes in those regions with fewer cases of Covid have been allowed to open for in-door dining for short periods.

However, a new increase in Covid infections appears to be driven by virus variants, with tens of thousands of new cases daily, along with hundreds of COVID-19 deaths per day.
