SOMINOT, Zamboanga del Sur, March 4 (PIA) - The establishment of a communication network is very important in every town to immediately convey important information to the people especially in this time of pandemic.

Mayor Johnriel Melo expressed, recently, during the 17th launching of the Barangay Information Officers 'Network (BION) held at the Gender and Development (GAD) center that the establishment of the BION is a welcome development.

"The creation of BION is very important and we can now make it a part of our lives because the real information can be easily conveyed to the most remote barangays through the communication network," Melo said.

Melo added that due to the power of communication technologies, information can also be quickly delivered to the people who will contribute to the development of an area.

The local chief executive officer also observed that the technology was being used in an inaccurate manner and that 'fake news' was spreading on social media platforms which caused people to be divided," Melo observed.

"There is so much fake news spreading on social media that confuses people so we really need to investigate and verify whether that information is credible or not," Melo explained.

Meanwhile, Dr. Richelle Villanueva, the municipal health officer thanked the LGU for creating the BION as it can be used by the government as force multipliers to disseminate real information especially that COVID-19 vaccines have arrived.

Villanueva said that through BION they will help inform and explain to people the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccination program.

She added that in her experience of going to the mountains regularly, she noticed that there were too many people who did not want to be vaccinated.

"This is an opportunity for BION members to let the people know on the update of the COVID-19 vaccination program and the benefits it will provide to the people in order to increase people's confidence," Villanueva announced.

Villanueva also said the government is targeting 70% of the country's population to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity against coronavirus disease 2019, so it is imperative that BION help inform people of the benefits provided by the program. (RVC/GCC/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
